|First off, I want to say
visiting my website, emilyduffjazz.com! |
I am a performing musician, teacher, and composer. My interest in music started with the piano at age 5, and continued with the saxophone when I was 10 years old. I now play the saxophone, piano, flute, and clarinet, and gig professionally.
I grew up with a wide variety of music, ranging from classical operas,
to Huey Lewis and the News and Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.
My interest in jazz actually came from playing reduced versions of George Gershwin
compositions on the piano, and from a school project that I did on jazz improvisation
when I was 12 years old. As part of my project, I sought instruction from jazz vibraphonist
Gary Miller, a professional musician and graduate of Berklee College of Music. I continued
to study jazz with him for six years, and started playing jazz gigs when I was 16. I was
accepted into the music program at Westfield State University on scholarship, where I
studied with saxophonist Ted Levine. In 2010 I graduated with a B.A. in Jazz Studies,
and won awards such as the Villanova Best Soloist '10 award, and the Academic Excellence
Award in Jazz Performance at Westfield State. I continued my music
education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst under Professor Jeff Holmes, pursuing my
Masters degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging, graduating in the spring of 2014 .
I perform and write many different styles of music. I have played gigs throughout New England and New York City, ranging from shows and concerts to clubs, weddings and special events. I play gigs with many groups. I have played with the Wildcat O'Halloran Band, Orquesta El Nuevo Impacto, the Amherst Jazz Orchestra, and the Raft, just to name a few. For the last three years I have been performing on cruise ships run by Norwegian and Celebrity cruise lines. During this time I have seen much of the Mediteranean, the Baltic, and the Carribean. Currently I have accepted the position of Professor of Woodwinds at Nanhai Conservitory in Haikou China. This is a very exciting opportunity for me to combine my passion for music with my love of adventure.
